“Myth and Reality” by Photographer Jeremy Jude Lee

I find these photographs fascinating because of the way they carry a complex narrative with a series of carefully crafted, but nonetheless still images. The narrative conveyed is of a young Asian boy’s coming of age surrounded by white actors in the roles in coming of age media that he was ‘supposed to identify with’. The use of symbols (such as baseball gloves, playing cards, or cigarettes), the carefully chosen settings (open, green fields in late afternoon with strong sunlight), the faded vignette, and so on all synthesize to produce a nostalgic but melancholy story.
