For film, a visual art, sight plays more of a role than sound does, but in Netflix’s new movie, Bird Box, there is a shift of sensual focus from sight to auditory perception, due to the nature of the dark force. For those who have not seen the movie (spoiler alert!), the protagonist ends up at a school for the blind, where the blind people are safe since they cannot see the force. What I think is most interesting about this scene is that the hidden oasis is visually very beautiful, yet most of the inhabitants cannot observe this. Nevertheless, the beautiful mass of songbirds pleasure all listeners and shift the focus from visual art to musical art. Throughout the film, the people must sacrifice their sight to stay safe and use their ears to navigate the world. It shifts our perceptive to the world that blind people live in every day.
